Review: The Cure for Dreaming

Hello to all of you lovely bookworms out in the world! Welcome to my review of The Cure for Dreaming!

  Title: The Cure for Dreaming
Author: Cat Winters
Release Date: October 14 2014
Rating: 7.5/10
Source: Store Bought

Olivia Mead is a headstrong, independent girl—a suffragist—in an age that prefers its girls to be docile. It’s 1900 in Oregon, and Olivia’s father, concerned that she’s headed for trouble, convinces a stage mesmerist to try to hypnotize the rebellion out of her. But the hypnotist, an intriguing young man named Henri Reverie, gives her a terrible gift instead: she’s able to see people’s true natures, manifesting as visions of darkness and goodness, while also unable to speak her true thoughts out loud. These supernatural challenges only make Olivia more determined to speak her mind, and so she’s drawn into a dangerous relationship with the hypnotist and his mysterious motives, all while secretly fighting for the rights of women. Winters breathes new life into history once again with an atmospheric, vividly real story, including archival photos and art from the period throughout.

So this book takes place over 100 years ago, at the time when women were beginning to desire the right to vote. Olivia Mead is one of the few women who support the cause. When she is spotted at a protest by one of her father's clients, her VERY conservative father hires Henri Reverie, an extremely talented hypnotist, to hypnotize the rebelliousness out of Olivia. Instead, however, he gives her the ability to see people's true characters when she looks at them, and restricts her ability to speak when she gets angry. Olivia is driven to sufferagism even more, and also begins a relationship with the very mysterious Henri Reverie, who may or may not have a few secrets up his sleeve.

Characters:
Olivia: Olivia is a great protagonist. She's smart, incredibly stubborn, gorgeous, and more than a little rebellious. She's horrified when she's granted the ability to see people's true natures, and desperately wants her normal sight back. She's driven to sufferagism in part by her mother, who is a feminist, and left Olivia's father, who is way more than a little sexist, and a few more things that I could mention. Olivia is very relatable, and her emotional journey throughout the book is completely tangible.

Henri Reverie: Henri is an EXTREMELY handsome and skilled hypnotist who is hired by Olivia's father to hypnotize her rebelliousness out of her. Instead he gives her the power to see people's true natures, and ends up helping her convince people that giving women the right to vote is the right thing to do. He is smart, loyal, protective, and caring, and has an illusive and mysterious past.

Mead the Mad (AKA Olivia's evil dad): I hate him for his evilness and cruelty towards Olivia and people in general. 'Nuff said.

Genevieve: She is Henri's sister and accompanying organist for his performances. She's intelligent, caring, friendly, and loyal, and becomes a good friend to Olivia. She's also less than honest about her and Henri's past, and still has more secrets to keep.

Overall: I went into this book expecting one thing, and found the book to be something else entirely. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there were several plot holes that completely threw me off, and made me go:

and:

One of them was Henri giving Olivia the ability to see people's true natures, and deciding to help Olivia instead of doing the job that he was paid for was totally unexplained. On the other hand, the characters were excellently portrayed and had unique personalities. Also, making Henri the hypnotist's last name 'Reverie' was very, very clever.

Other than those plot holes, the book was excellent! A job very well done to Cat Winters!
Have a wonderfully fantastic day everyone!

Review: Anomaly

Hello to all you beautifully wonderful bookworms in the world!! So, yesterday my plan was to read The Cure for Dreaming, but then what had to be one of the coolest things of life happened: the freaking awesome people at Entangled Teen sent me an ARC of Anomaly by Tonya Kuper!!! This book was high on my TBR list, and I had settled down for the month-long wait, but then magicness happened, and Anomaly came!!!

I immediately opened it up on my Kindle and started reading. Holy convenient shark repellent, Batman! Here we go!!

Title: Anomaly
Author: Tonya Kuper
Release Date: November 25 2014
Rating: Pi Squared (for all you Josies out there!)

Reality is only an illusion.
Except for those who can control it…

Worst. Birthday. Ever.
My first boyfriend dumped me—happy birthday, Josie!—my dad is who knows where, I have some weird virus that makes me want to hurl, and now my ex is licking another girl’s tonsils. Oh, and I’m officially the same age as my brother was when he died. Yeah, today is about as fun-filled as the swamps of Dagobah. But then weird things start happening…
Like I make something materialize just by thinking about it.
When hottily-hot badass Reid Wentworth shows up on a motorcycle, everything changes. Like, everything. Who I am. My family. What really happened to my brother. Existence. I am Oculi, and I have the ability to change reality with my thoughts. Now Reid, in all his hotness, is charged with guiding and protecting me as I begin learning how to bend reality. And he’s the only thing standing between me and the secret organization that wants me dead…

This book cover is one of the coolest I have ever seen, and the book is one of the best that I have read! Like WOW.

So Anomaly begins on Josie Harper's crappy seventeenth birthday: her first boyfriend breaks up with her, her dad is somewhere over the rainbow, she's got a massive migraine, and her mom is being her insanely overprotective self. But then, two insanely hot guys enroll at her school, and for some weird reason, as soon as Josie pictures how she wants one of them to look, she gets a sharp pain behind her eyes. Then the guy takes off his motorcycle helmet, and to her shock, the guy looks exactly the way Josie had pictured. The guy, who later introduces himself as Reid, explains that she is an Oculus, and can manipulate reality through sheer willpower. Reid has to protect and train Josie, because there is a reckoning coming, and there are lots of people who don't want Josie to make it to it alive. Now Josie has to Push herself (pun intended) and train her butt off, otherwise she'll be royally screwed... Not to mention dead.

Characters:
Josie: Josie is one of the most entertaining protagonists that I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. She's a self-proclaimed dork, constantly making hilarious physics, Star Wars, Star Trek, and X-Men references, and wears wicked awesome clothes that quote the aforementioned. She's also insanely smart, and is days away from receiving an award from the VP for excellence in physics. Josie is incredibly well written; her attitude and reactions to the world and the revelations of Oculi are completely believable and relatable. She's a great older sister to her younger brother Eli. The sexual tension and relationship between her and Reid is constantly shifting, from her wariness when they first met, to their relationship at the end. Josie learns to master her powers quickly (a result of her very high intelligence) and is a total badass!. She is written so well that it's easy to empathize and relate to her. Josie is officially my new #wcw!

Reid: Reid is badass. Like really badass. Whenever he uses his powers, it's like:

Dayyum! Like shown above: freaking awesome. Reid is insanely good with his powers, buff, smart, capable, and protective. In other words, HOT. He is charged with protecting and training Josie like Master Yoda, but way hotter, so probably more like Obi-Wan. He's an excellent teacher, even if his methods are basically derived from 'sink or swim.' His job also comes with a few secrets that he has to keep from Josie, regarding multiple issues and situations. The sexual tension between them is completely tangible and their relationship is very well paced. Hello, new book boyfriend!

Santos: Santos is Reid's best friend - his only friend actually, and is one of the main sources of comic relief in the book. He's a Pusher - and very good at it, and helps with Josie's training. He also serves as a buffer for some of the tense moments between Josie and Reid.

Hannah: Hannah is Josie's best friend, and she's a pretty awesome one. Hannah forms a fast friendship with Santos once he and Reid join the story. She's funny, supportive, caring, and sweet, even though she and Josie are practically polar opposites - Hannah's a cheerleader, and an enthusiastic, peppy one at that, and she's always there for Josie.

Mrs. Harper: She's definitely been through a lot in the past, and is unbelievably protective and suffocating as a mother. She sometimes comes across as cruel and cold, but she truly does care for Josie and Eli, even if her methods are a little unorthodox at times.

Eli: Eli is Josie's adorable little brother who loves his family, and playing video games, especially with his older sister. If I had a little brother, I'd want him to be like Eli.

Overall: Absolutely fantastic book! I went through the book insanely quickly because I was so into it! When I finished it, I was like wait,

The plot's pacing was perfect, the double POV was above par, the characters were amazingly well written, and the whole concept of the story is fascinating! The relationship and romance was very well realized. A debut novel fantastically well done! Major props to Tonya Kuper! Still can't get over that cover!

Have a fantastically amazing day everyone!

Review: Eternal

Hello to all you lovely bookworms! Welcome to my review of Eternal!

Title: Eternal
Author: C.C. Hunter
Release Date: October 28 2014
Rating: 9/10
Source: Store Bought

WARNING: This book will contain spoilers for Reborn, and the Shadow Falls series! You have been warned.

Just when Della feels like she’s starting to figure out her life, she finds herself reborn…and her new existence comes with a whole different rulebook.
Della's secret powers always made her feel like an outsider in the human world. Now, just when she’s starting to feel like she belongs—at Shadow Falls, a camp for teens with paranormal powers—her life is turned upside down all over again. Attacked by a deadly virus, she must make the difficult choice to be reborn. It’s her only chance at survival, but it comes with a price: It irreparably bonds her to Chase, a tall, dark and mesmerizing vampire who makes her laugh one minute and infuriates her the next.Chase already knows too many of Della’s secrets, and being eternally bonded to him is the last thing she wants. Even worse, she doesn’t fully understand what their bond means. Is the attraction she’s started feeling for Chase real—or does fate have something else in store? And what does that mean for Steve, the hot shapeshifter whose kisses make her weak in the knees? Now Della’s battered heart is about to take another hit. While investigating her latest case, she discovers shocking evidence about her father’s dark past, making her question everything she believes to be true…and her place in the world she loves.

THIS BOOK FREAKING ROCKS! The main plot has Della and Chase investigating the vampire slave ring that was discovered in Reborn. Della and Chase receive a vision of two newly turned vampire slaves, Natasha and Liam, who are buried alive and are feeding off of each other to survive. Della and Chase have to find and save them before they die. There is a ton of sexual tension between Chase and Della, even though Della repeatedly denies her attraction and the bond to him. It is revealed that Della is hiding her new powers as a Reborn from Kylie and Miranda, as well as mostly everyone else at Shadow Falls. Steve and Della's relationship is adorable, as well as Perry and Miranda's, and when Della found Miranda crying at 3 A.M., it wasn't hard to figure out why.

Characters:
Della: Della goes through a lot of crap in Eternal, from heartbreak, to burying Chan, to discovering secrets about her family, and to her rocky relationship with Chase. Her commentary and POV are hilariously entertaining, especially when it comes to her patented sarcastic snarkiness. She is even more badass now, due to her new Reborn abilities, which definitely come in handy throughout the book. Although Della stubbornly refuses to share her feelings with Kylie and Miranda, she is beginning to warm up to the idea of physical affection with her friends (like hugging - as Della sees, it's impossible to resist hugs from Miranda). Keeping things from her friends is a problem that has continued from the previous books, as it's emotionally destructive for her, and her friends almost always find out what she was hiding anyways, and then get upset with her for keeping it from them. By the end of Eternal, Della seems to be seeing the error of her ways.

Chase: Half the time I liked him, and the other half, I wanted to murder him for all of the lies that he is constantly spewing. The fact that he seems to be able to control his heartbeat when he lies makes it much more difficult to tell whether or not he is being honest. However, Chase does have genuine feelings for Della, even if he spouts crude one-liners to her about his feelings. He and Della have some funny and entertaining adventures in Eternal, and several awkward scenes. Della's comebacks to Chase made me laugh every time. He is dedicated to finding Natasha and Liam, and takes Della's side when she insists to Holiday and Burnett that they are alive. Chase may have lost some of his 'warts,' but he still has a long while to go before he can truly be trusted.

Miranda: Miranda goes through some heartbreak as well in Eternal, and binges on ice cream to try to help her get over it. I was truly onboard the feels train when it came to Miranda (and definitely Della too). She definitely tugged at my heartstrings, especially when it was revealed that Perry hadn't called Miranda at all. Even in the midst of her own heartbreak, Miranda consistently tries to help Della with hers.

Kylie: There wasn't much of Kylie in Eternal, but when she did appear, she was doing her part as a best friend and relationship guru, always trying to help Miranda and Della with what they were going through.

Steve: Although I seriously ship #Stella, Steve was being obnoxious with his over the top jealousy of Della and Chase's bond and their working together. I think he forgot all about the smiley blond girl who HE works with that he was attracted to in Reborn.

Perry: I really like Perry, and I totally ship #Piranda, but in Eternal, he was a real jerk, especially to Miranda. He majorly deserves Miranda's patented kangaroo and pimples hex. 'Nuff said.

Overall, this was a fantastic book! The pacing and character development are amazing, and I went through this book at lightning speed.

It kept getting better and better! A book very well written, C.C. Hunter! My one complaint is that Della is STILL keeping her feelings to herself, despite all of the opportunities she had to share them. After all, what are friends for?

Have a fantastic day everyone!!

Review: Stone Cold Touch

Hello again to all you lovely fellow bookworms in the world! Welcome to my very first official book review! Woohoo!! :D

                                                              Title: Stone Cold Touch
                                                              Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
                                                              Release Date: October 21 2014
                                                              Rating: 10/10

WARNING: This review WILL contain spoilers for White Hot Kiss! You have been warned.

Every touch has its price
Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who's pretty sure things can't get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.
But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla's powers begin to evolve, and she's offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She's finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay….

THIS BOOK FREAKING ROCKS MY SOCKS!! Like seriously. ROCKS MY SOCKS. *CUE HAPPY DANCE*

So, Stone Cold Touch picks up two weeks after White Hot Kiss ended. Roth is gone, supposedly dead, Zayne is beginning to reveal his feelings for Layla, and Layla is mourning Roth, AND finding herself falling harder for Zayne. And then, of course, because things couldn't get any more tense, Roth returns.

I won't give anything away, because I personally hate spoilers, and I don't want to inflict the utter horror and frustration that spoilers entail. Below is the fate of the evil and cruel people who spoil things:

I have never read a Jennifer L. Armentrout book that I didn't like, and I especially loved Stone Cold Touch. I originally preordered it on paperback from Amazon, but then they told me that it wouldn't ship for a very long time because they were sold out. Major props to JLA for being so awesome! So, I bought it on Kindle earlier today, because I absolutely COULD NOT WAIT to read it. But I digress.

The plot's pacing is fantastic, as per usual for a JLA book, and I was sitting at the edge of my chair in lecture, because new JLA books are a priority, you know. There was never a dull moment, and my curiosity was constantly being aroused as to what on earth was going to happen next. It just kept getting better and better as I frantically flicked the screen on my phone like a madwoman. The suspense just kept building and building, and then MAJOR REVEAL AND HUGE CLIFFHANGER at the very end.

Characters:
Layla: I basically felt all of her pain, angst, and anguish. In Stone Cold Touch, her naivete takes a plunge; she goes through something that disillusions her (#nospoilers) and she is more understanding and exposed to the 'real world'. Her relationship with Zayne is major amazingness as it shifts from mostly frienship into romance.

Zayne: I didn't really like Zayne so much in WHK. Then I read BSL and I liked him a bit more. Now, I've read SCT, and I REALLY like him. Here we see the sexier, more playful side of Zayne, as he becomes more confident, and casually teases and flirts with Layla. He still has his protective side, but he is much more open with the idea of her helping fight evil demons and stuff. Their training together continues, but gets much much hotter ;D. I felt like Zayne really grew up and became more mature than the way he was in WHK. He also learns that it might not be such a good idea to blindly trust everything his father says and does. He also really does try to put aside his immense dislike of Roth, mostly for Layla's sake, although he and Roth do get into some hilarious testosterone-fueled arguments.

Roth: In Stone Cold Touch, we see the colder, crueler version of Roth - basically the a-hole version. I don't like this side of him very much. He genuinely wants to help though, and may or may not still have feeling for Layla. He also tries (kind of) to work with Zayne for Layla's sake, and he constantly spouts hilarious one-liners that had me cracking up in the middle of lecture, with 'you heavenly reject!' probably being my favourite. This book was more focused on Layla's relationship with Zayne, so there definitely wasn't as much Roth to go around as there was in WHK.

Danika: There is way more Danika in SCT, compared to WHK. I didn't like her in WHK, then I read BSL and I liked her a lot more, and now, in SCT, I REALLY like her. I feel bad for her, honestly, because Zayne and Layla are so much more openly affectionate now, and Danika is also in love with Zayne, not to mention the fact that she grew up believing she would be his mate. It's clear how sad and upset she is that Zayne is with Layla. She surprisingly admits her jealousy to Layla, and the two then have a heart to heart convo, and become friends, which I was insanely happy about.

Abbot: I want him to die a horrible, gruesome death. 'Nuff said.

Overall, SCT is an absolutely fantastic book, which I love, as per usual with JLA books. The character development was excellent and perfectly paced, the plot was fantastic and heart-pounding, and evoked both laughter and sympathy/sadness.

When JLA announced the vote for either #Zayla or #Rayla, I was 100% sure I would vote for Roth based on WHK. NOW I CANNOT DECIDE!! Well done, JLA!! A book perfectly written, and a love traignle perfectly balanced!! Now, GIVE ME EVERY LAST BREATH!! NEED IT THIS VERY INSTANT!!

Have a fantastic day, you wonderful people!
